I wanted to change the design on an older file. I started working on the new design and saved every time I finished the session. After a few days, when I was done, I saved it on the desktop. Then, when I reopened it, all the new progress was gone and the original design reappeared. How is this even possible? I deleted the old one and drew new structures over the course of days and several saves. Is there a way to restore it?

I guess you have saved your changes in a different format. For example your design was a mydesign.gds and if you change the format you may get a mydesign.oas with all the changes and the original design is still in mydesign.gds.

No, I have been saving them with the same format! And after repeating everything, it happened again :( Why does it keep reverting to the original file? This is what I did: * I opened an old file that I designed last year. * Started working on it, making changes to the design. * Every once in a while, I save a new separate file (e.g., file 1, file 2, file 3, etc). * I closed and reopened the files, and everything was fine. It shows me the new stuff. * Finally, I created the fifth file (the final one), I luckily uploaded it to the cloud to change the format. This was last Thursday. * Today (Monday), I have reopened all the files, and they all have the original design from a year ago. However, I have saved files with the same extension (.lec) more than 4 times.

I guess your design has more than one top cell. GDS and LEC can contain more than one design. When opening a file, the most complex top cell is displayed. Via the control 'displayed cell' you can select which cell should be shown. So your design may contain one cell with the original state and one cell with all the changes you made. With the feature 'cell utilities/remove not needed cells' you can remove all not needed cell of the current displayed cell. Nether GDS nor LEC contain any history data and therefore it is technically impossible that a file reverts to an older state.
