In the past I used an older version of layout editor. After seeing the capabilities of the new version I decided to install the new version to simplify my life some. I then created a design. Now I am in my universities clean room, which still uses an older version of layout editor, to create my mask. My file is node locked as an LEC and the older version does not recognize it. Is it simply a matter of updating the software of the computer that controls the mask maker or would it not export even then? Do I just need to re do my design on the older version of the software? What is the simplest way to convert this file into a regular DXF?

The LEC file format is an encrypted file format to avoid a design transfer to other systems. It is intended to use with our cloud services to avoid any design transfer even in the unlikely event a unwanted person gets access to our cloud server. So it is impossible to view the design on another system than the system it was created on. To transfer the design to another system you had to store it in a different format on the system it was created on. A full license key is required for this conversion.

Thank you for your quick response. So I would never be able to actually make this mask with the free version? I would need to either buy the license or use your photomask creator? In your product description of the free service it stated that export could be done for small file sizes. What is the definition of small?

Yes, you can do photomasks with the free version. The limit for a GDSII export in the free version is in the moment 500 shapes inside the GDSII. So for example if you have a circle and an array with a dimension of 1000 x 1000, this are just two shapes. The limit will increase with the next update of the LayoutEditor and getting flexible. If you just do a file conversion without any editing it will be much higher. If you do editing by a script it will stay at 500 shapes. Of course the free version can be used without any size limit, if our photomask service or our conversion service is used. The LEC file format is accepted by our photomask service.
